Historical Context: April, 1941

The Lee Theatre in Cherryvalle, Kansas first opened for business in 1909 as the Star Theatre. Its name had changed to the Lee by 1941 when its main Sunday feature April 27 was Chad Hanna (1940).

The United States had not yet entered World War II. The Battle of Thermopylae April 24–25 spearheaded the German invasion of Greece. 

In other news, both Wonder Woman and Captain America comics began publication during 1941, and Joe DiMaggio achieved his record breaking 56-game hitting streak.

In January of that year, aviator Charles Lindbergh, testifying before the U.S. Congress, recommended that the United States negotiate a neutrality pact with Adolf Hitler.

“Elmer’s Pet Rabbit” was a 1941 Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies cartoon directed by Chuck Jones. The short marked the second appearance of that “wascally wabbit” Bugs Bunny.
